Strength training is more than just strength training. Let's look at the bigger picture for a moment. Let's take a step back and look at "the process" of strength training, which includes all three areas (body, mind and spirit). I will show you some interesting similarities with the general process of life.
When we begin the process of becoming stronger it begins with a choice. The motive may vary from person to person though common at the core, change. Whether it is change of appearance, ability, health or all of the above. We must begin the process by choosing to be strong, changing our current state of being with a choice.
From the choice we move to the action phase. We work, we train, in a way which will spark change in our body, mind and spirit. For the majority of people, they don't know the science behind strength training, other than, 'if I work out my body should change."
What is needed, to put it simply, is continual progressive resistance training. Continually training with a resistance that is a little more than your previous training session. But I digress, this is for another article.
Now, the science of training will only get you so far because each person is so unique that there is not a "one-size-fits-all" approach to programming. Again, common at the core since we move in similar patterns to each other. But, there are people who get stronger almost by looking at the weights while others struggle no matter what they do.
This is where the faith phase comes into play in the process. There is a point in training were you must start to believe in something greater than yourself and the weights.
You see, we may train, work hard, do all the right things but there is no guarantee we will grow stronger.
Yes, science can help us to understand certain why's and why not's but at the end of day there is no guarantee.
As I mention above, the process, is a common theme in life. In business there are no guarantees, in relationships there are no guarantees.
There is only choice, action and faith. Let's look at a couple examples:
Ex. 1: The farmer or gardener.
They want to grow crops, plants or food. (Choice) So, they follow the science, get good clean soil, plant seeds, water and feed seeds (Action)... Now they can only sit back, wait and see if their seeds will grow. (Faith)
Ex. 2: The entrepreneur.
They have an idea to help people solve a problem and want to share their idea. (Choice) They create a bulletproof, simple way to help a person solve their problem. (Action) Now, surely they will market and try and sell their product, again, there is no guarantee their product will sell even if it can solve a problem. (Faith)
Faith is required in all things.
All power and strength are given by God. Growth is given to us by God. All we need is given to us from God.
"Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel -- he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God!" Psalm 68:35
Those who have faith in something greater than themselves are more likely to succeed. Those who have faith in God's love, power and salvation are even more likely to succeed.
In strength, health, and life there is a natural process. Through this process we have been given a choice. Whether in training, work, or play; choosing to trust and surrender to God and his will, is a choice with eternal possibilities.
